Southern Maine wins 10th Little East Conference Championship

PROVIDENCE, R.I.-The University of Southern Maine captured the program's 10th Little East Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship this afternoon at Rhode Island College. The Huskies accumulated 199 total team points to earn the program's ninth consecutive conference trophy. Eastern Connecticut State University placed second with 135 points, while Keene State College was credited with 111 points.

Senior Gabrielle Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) and sophomore Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) each won two individual events to pace the Southern Maine attack at the 12th annual Little East Conference Championship. Cyr excelled in the long distance races, winning the 5,000-meter run (18:52.16) and the 1,500-meter run (4:49.72). Artesani claimed both the 200 and 400-meter dashes, crossing the finish line at 26.32 and 58.33, respectively. Senior Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine) also shined at the conference championships, earning four top-three finishes including the long jump title (5.08 meters).

Eastern Connecticut State University was led by a balanced lineup as four Warrior student-athletes hoisted an individual trophy. Junior Nidia Gonzalez Lopez (Cromwell, Conn.) and freshman Karina Johnson (East Hartford, Conn.) were the first runners to cross the finish line in the 10,000-meter run and 800-meter run, respectively. Sophomore Erika Barber (Portland, Conn.) and classmate Monica Mills (East Hartford, Conn.) each climbed to the top of the podium in the pole vault and triple jump, respectively. Eastern Connecticut also captured the team 4X400-meter relay with a combined effort of 4:08.82. The Warriors also finished second to the Huskies in the final New England Alliance Championship standings.
