Karina Johnson sets record, gains All-New England honors

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Freshman Karina Johnson (East Hartford) broke the program record at 800 meters for the second straight week in attaining All-New England honors at the Division III New England Women's Track and Field Championships Saturday at the Tennis and Track Center on the Smith College campus.
After breaking the program record at 800 meters last Saturday with a winning time of 2:20.79 at the Little East Conference/New England Alliance Meet, Johnson knocked another second off that mark with a time of 2:19.81 which was good enough for seventh place overall in a field of 21 and All-New England status.
With two points, Johnson was the only individual to garner points, but the 4x200 meter relay broke its own program record set two weeks ago by 24 hundreths of a second (1:49.43) in logging the team's other three points and achieving All-New England recognition with a sixth-place finish. The runners in the relay were the same as those who broke the record Feb. 9: freshmen Alyssia Lumbra (Stafford) and Amber Petrizzo (Plainville), sophomore Monica Mills (East Hartord), and senior Saryn Evans (Willimantic).
A total of 25 institutions recorded at least one point in the meet, which was won by Tufts University (136 points). Williams College (128.5) was second, MIT (79) third and Springfield College (76) fourth. Among Little East Conference schools, Keene State College (38.5) was eighth, University of Southern Maine (24) 11th, UMass Dartmouth (6) tied for 16th, Eastern (5) 18th, and Rhode Island College (3 )tied for 20th.
The top eight individuals and relays in each event are accorded All-New England recognition.
Competing in the meet for the first time, sophomore Erika Barber (Portland) equalled her program record with a mark of 9-6 ¼ in placing tenth in a field of 22 in the pole vault. Barber tied for eighth place with two other competitors. Based on jumps, the final All-New England spot went to Sarah Wilson of Middlebury. Mills also fell just shy of gaining All-New England status with a ninth-place finish in the triple jump, just three-quarters of an inch shy of eighth place. The distance medley relay also placed ninth, five seconds out of eighth place.
Other competitors in the meet running individual events were Lumbra and junior Katie La Marr (Cromwell) at 55 meters, Petrizzo and Evans at 400 meters, and junior Nidia Gonzalez Lopez (Cromwell) in the mile. For the sixth time in her career, and third time in three races this season, Gonzalez Lopez bettered her time in the mile, checking in with a PR of 5:28.67 Saturday.
At last year's meet, Gonzalez Lopez ( DMR), Evans (4x400) and Mills (4x400) earned All-New England laurels, as did sophomore Nicole Stefanik (Coventry, RI). Stefanik was a member of the distance medley relay both last year and this year.
