Anchorwomen Claim Coast Guard Invitational

New London, Conn.—The Rhode Island
College women’s indoor track and field team took first among
five teams with a score of 157 at the Coast Guard Invitational. The
Anchorwomen outdistanced second place Connecticut College by 17
points (140.0), with Coast Guard (112.0), Eastern Connecticut
(101.0) and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (10.0) rounding out
the standings.
Junior Kayla Fleming (Pawtucket, R.I.) took home
first place in three events, winning the 1,000 meters with a time
of 3:12.41, the high jump at 1.60 meters and the long jump at 4.68
meters.
Sophomore Steina Fleming (Tortola, BVI) placed
first in both the 55 and 200 meters with times of 7.46 and 27.81,
respectively.
Junior Mary Ellen Horsman (Barrington, R.I.) took
home the top spot in the weight throw with a 12.64-meter effort,
while sophomore Stephanie Bucci (Smithfield, RI) was second at
11.84 meters.
RIC won two relay events as well, as Steina Fleming, freshman
Kayla DiBlasi (Smithfield, R.I.), freshman
Jamie Nunes (Lincoln, R.I.) and sophomore
Brooke Iby (Dracut, Mass.) combined to win both
the 4x200 and 4x400 events with times of 1:54.70 and 4:36.21,
respectively.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will compete at the
Wesleyan Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m.
