Anchorwomen earn 5th consecutive regular season crown

North Dartmouth, Mass.—Rhode Island
College downed UMass Dartmouth, 5-4, to clinch a share of the
Little East Conference Women’s Tennis Regular Season
Championship on Saturday afternoon. RIC, which raises its record to
10-3 overall and 6-1 in the Little East Conference, will share the
honor with the Corsairs, who see their record fall to 8-3 overall
and 6-1 in league play. UMass Dartmouth had been undefeated in
Little East action prior to the match. The Anchorwomen, who have
won the regular season title outright the past four years, have now
been the top finisher in the league for five consecutive
seasons.
Bridgewater State, which is the only LEC blemish on RIC’s
schedule, can also clinch a share of the regular season title if it
defeats Salem State today, Southern Maine tomorrow and Western
Connecticut on Monday.
The Anchorwomen and Corsairs split the six singles matches with
doubles action deciding the contest. Rhode Island College junior
Meg Funk (Oakdale, Conn.) and senior Sasha
Doonan Rodriguez (Pawtucket, R.I.) won the decisive match
at No. 1 doubles, 8-6, to earn the victory. Doonan Rodriguez also
won her match at No. 2 singles, while sophomore Jaclyn
Eastman (Mansfield, Mass.) did the same at No. 5 singles
and No. 3 doubles, respectively.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will close out the regular
season with a non-conference match at Simmons on Monday, Oct. 15
before hosting the Little East Conference Women’s Tennis
Championships on Oct. 19-20.
