Barber repeats New England titles in 1,000 and 1,650 free

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior Sarah
Barber (Meridan/F.T. Maloney HS) won New England titles
for the third straight year in the 1,000 and 1,650 yard freestyle
events and freshman Jessica Wilson (Torrington/Torrington
HS) earned All-New England honors in two breaststroke
events this weekend at the 2007 Division II-III New England
Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Championships at Swasey Poll on
the campus of the University of New Hampshire.
Bentley College (881 points), one of three Division II institutions
involved in the meet, outscored Little East Conference champion
Keene State College (791.5) to claim the team title. Eastern (208)
was 15th among 22 institutions which scored points.
The top six finishers in individual events and top three relays
were accorded All-New England status.
Barber swam her fastest times of the year in earning All-New
England honors in the 500, 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle events for the
third straight year. She placed second in the 500 for the second
straight year after winning the title as a freshman in 2005. That
year, she made a sweep of all three of the distance freestyle
events.
Wilson earned All-New England status by finishing fifth in the 50
breaststroke and sixth in the 100 breaststroke in record-setting
times. She broke her own program record in the 100 breaststroke by
ten hundredths of a second with a time of 1:12.67 in the
preliminaries; in the 50 breaststroke, she was timed in 32.94,
breaking the four-year old record by 39 hundreths of a second.
Wilson was seventh in the 200 breaststroke – just four
hundredths of a second off her program record – to miss
earning All-New England honors in a third event. She was edged out
for sixth place in the event by less than a second by Roger
Williams University senior Jenny Dill.
Barber, who holds program record in four freestyle events, bettered
her season best in the 1,650 by 44 seconds with a time of 18:02.59
and improved her season-best times in the 1,000 by nearly 17
seconds with a time of 10:48.50 and in the 500 by ten seconds with
a time of 5:16.56.
The 400 medley relay broke the program’s third record of the
weekend by 44 hundreths of a second with a time of 4:27.45 in the
preliminaries on the way to an eventual tenth-place finish. The old
record was set in last year’s New England championship.
Barber swam the third leg of the relay and was joined by freshmen
Carol Ann Smith (Newtown/Newtown HS), Wilson, and
Maureen Cop (Southington/Southington HS).
Individually, Barber collected 74 of the team’s points and
also contributed to four of the five relays which amassed a total
of 56 points; Wilson followed with 53 points in individual events
and also swam four relays; freshman Sarah Dombrowski
(Southington/Southington HS) had ten points and swam two
relays; freshman Casey Harrigan (Bristol/Bristol Central
HS) nine points and one relay; junior Kaitlyn
Kociela (Montague, MA/Turners Falls HS) six points and
three relays; Smith and first-year junior Kara Forman
(Manchester/Manchester HS) one relay each and Cop four
relays.
Dombrowski established personal-bests with times of 19:56.26 in the
1,650 freestyle (13th place) and 5:19.04 in the 400 individual
medley (16th place) while Kociela also had PR (20:03.42) in the
1,650 freestyle (15th place) and Harrigan a PR of 2:30.19 in the
trials of the 200 butterfly.
The meet concludes the program’s 11th intercollegiate season
– all under head coach Maureen Fahey –
with a record of 6-4-1 in dual meet competition.
