Eastern Connecticut Earns 1st Win At Western Connecticut, 2-1

DANBURY, Conn. -- All-Little East Conference
senior midfielder Sarah Swann (Oxford, Conn.) may
not exactly have been a Colonial-killer in her four-year career,
but she's certainly had her share of success against Western
Connecticut State University.
Saturday night, Swann scored her first goals of the season less
than 10 minutes apart in the first half as women's soccer
edged three-time defending conference playoff champion Western
Connecticut at the Westside Athletic Complex.
The win is the first for Eastern Connecticut (3-2-1, 1-0-0
Little East) over the Colonials (3-3-0, 0-1-0) since 2004
(0-5-3 since then) and represents the Warriors' first win ever over
Western Conn. in Danbury (0-8-2 since 1995). Over the last
four years, Western has compiled a 24-1-3 record in Little
East regular-season play and as this year's preseason favorite
to claim the conference title. The teams shared last year's
regular-season title with identical 6-0-1 records, but Western
defeated Eastern for the second straight year in the tournament
finals at Danbury, both by 2-1 scores.
Western is ranked sixth in New England.
Swann's first goal off a corner kick by senior midfielder
Taylor MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) in the 20th
minute swung the early momentum Eastern's way. Less than 10
minutes later, Swann used her quickness to split two defenders and
head a pass from freshman midfielder Kelly Wallace (South
Windsor, Conn.) under the crossbar and into the left
corner of the net to make it a two-goal game.
The goals give Swann 20 in her career and 50 points. Four of her
career goals have come against Western for Swann, who has scored
four of Eastern's five goals against the Colonials the last four
times the teams have met. Last year, Swann tied the regular-season
match midway through the second half in the Warriors' 1-1 overtime
tie at Thomas Nevers Field. As a sophomore in 2007, Swann also
provided Eastern with its only goal in a 2-1 loss to the Colonials
in the LEC championship game at the Westside Athletic Complex.
The teams played on near-even terms. Both teams had three corner
kicks and recorded nearly identical shot totals. However, with the
exception of a penalty-kick goal in the 65th minute on a hand ball
violation, Western managed only one other shot on goal, with
Eastern senior keeper Kim Church (Farmington,
Conn.) registering the save. The Warriors put five of
their shots on net, scoring twice and forcing Western freshman
keeper Amanda Simon to come up with three saves.
Eastern's starting defense consisted of senior Christine
Lemieux (South Windsor, Conn.), juniors Lauren
Hickey (Southwick, Mass.) and Stephanie Norell
(Stratford, Conn.) and freshman Rachel Cutler
(Guilford, Conn.).
Eastern Connecticut visits the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Tuesday at
