Mattingly Named UMass Boston Women's Basketball Head Coach

BOSTON - University of Massachusetts Boston
Vice Chancellor for Athletics and Recreational Programs
Charlie Titus announced today that the University
has named Courtney Mattingly (Bainbridge, N.Y.) as
its Head Women's Basketball Coach.
"I am extremely excited that Courtney Mattingly has accepted our
offer to join the young and talented coaching staff of UMass
Boston," said Titus. "She brings great experience, knowledge and
energy to an already gifted group. Courtney is a proven recruiter
and tireless worker -- a great fit for where we are now and where
we hope to go in the future. We believe that coach Mattingly will
move UMB Women's Basketball to an elite position in New England
fairly quickly."
Mattingly becomes the program's 11th varsity head coach after
spending the previous six years as an assistant coach, including
the last four with Division I Saint Bonaventure University in St.
Bonaventure, NY.
The former guard has enjoyed success on the coaching sidelines
wherever she has been, beginning with her first stop as a graduate
assistant at Ithaca College, where the Bombers posted a 23-4
record, including a NCAA D-III playoff berth and the Empire 8
Conference title. During her stint at Ithaca in 2003-04, Mattingly
also earned a master's degree in exercise and sports science.
A coach with tremendous energy and enthusiasm, Mattingly moved on
to Bowdoin College the following year, where she helped guide the
Polar Bears to a 26-3 record en route to a New England Small
College Athletic Conference Championship and a berth in the NCAA
Division III Elite Eight.
She continued to move up the coaching ranks when she returned to
her alma mater at Saint Bonaventure as the Bonnies' top assistant
and recruiting coordinator. She shared multiple responsibilities
within the program, including player development, scouting,
practice and game preparation as well as working with the team's
guards. Mattingly helped turn a program around which suffered a
losing season in 2005-06 to enjoy winning campaigns of 16-15 in
2006-07 and 18-12 in 2007-08. Saint Bonaventure advanced to the
Atlantic 10 title game in 2008, but it was the following season
where everything would come together. Mattingly's stay with the
Bonnies culminated in the program's best-ever record of 23-11 and
their first-ever appearance in the WNIT, where they advanced to the
elite eight.
Mattingly graduated with honors from Saint Bonaventure in 2003 with
a bachelor's degree in psychology. She earned a spot on the
Atlantic 10 All-Conference second team as a junior and received
Academic All-Conference honors following junior and senior seasons.
During an award-winning junior campaign (2001-02), Mattingly
compiled season averages of 13.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
She also served as the Bonnies' team captain as a junior and
senior.
The Bainbridge, NY native currently ranks among the top 10 on Saint
Bonaventure's all-time list in points (1,256/eighth), rebounds
(585/seventh) and assists (300/eighth) and is also one of only
seven players in program history to surpass 1,000 points and 500
rebounds.
