Eastern Connecticut edges Southern Maine in OT

GORHAM, Maine   -  Junior forward Ashley McFetridge (Canton, Conn.) recorded a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds - both game high totals - to lead the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors to a 65-64 overtime win over the nationally-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies Saturday afternoon at Warren Hill Gymnasium in Gorham.

With the win Eastern Connecticut snapped the Huskies 78-game home winning streak - the third longest streak in NCAA Division III history.   The win also stopped a two-game slide for the Warriors who improve to 17-4 overall and 7-3 in the Little East.  Southern Maine, which entered the game with an 11-game win streak, falls to 19-2 overall and 9-1 in the conference.  The Huskies had not lost a conference game at home since February 19, 2000 when they fell to Western Connecticut 69-66.  Prior to today's loss, USM's previous home loss came at the hands of in-state rival Bowdoin College, 59-52, on December 2, 2003.

McFetridge was outstanding from the field, connecting on 9-of-17 from the field for her game-high 22.  Senior forward Stephanie Smith (Penacook, N.H./Merrimack Valley) added 14 points and five rebounds for the Warriors, while junior guard Nicky Morey (Columbia, Conn./Windham) tossed in 10 points.

Senior forward Angela Santa Fe (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) led four USM players in double figures with 17 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field, including a 3-for-4 mark from three-point range.  Senior forward Josalee Danieli (New Gloucester, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) added 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while senior forward Shannon Kynoch (South Burlington, Vt.) chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds.  Sophomore forward Becky Dixon (Pittston, Maine/Gardiner) added 10 points and six rebounds off of the bench and sophomore guard Nicole Paradis (Skowhegan, Maine) had seven points and a season-high seven assists.

Trailing by two points (62-60), Southern Maine senior forward Dawn Ross (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) scored her only basket of the game on a pull-up jumper at the top of the key to force the overtime action. In the overtime period both teams combined for just five points. Southern Maine missed two of its three shots in the five-minute extra stanza and made four turnovers.

Eastern Connecticut's Morey made was proved to be the game-winning basket with a jump shot two minutes into overtime, to give the Warriors a 65-64 lead with 3:02 to play.  Danieli had given Southern Maine a 64-63 lead with a lay-up following a steal from Kynoch.  The Huskies were unable to score over their next four possessions.  Eastern Connecticut also struggled offensively in the final three minutes of overtime, missing all four of its shots, but secured three offensive rebounds to maintain possession and help run time off of the clock.

Southern Maine had a chance to win the game earning a final possession with four second remaining after Morey missed a pair of free throws, but was unable to get off a clean shot as the ball was tangled up in traffic.

Southern Maine returns to action at home on Tuesday (February 12) when it hosts UMass Boston at 5:30 p.m.  Eastern Connecticut hosts Western Connecticut on the same date and time in a LEC match up.
