WestConn advances in 2008 NCAA Softball Tournament

GLASSBORO, N.J. - Cortney
Romyns hurled the second shut out of the afternoon for
Western Connecticut State University as they defeated Hunter
College, 4-0 in the NCAA Division III Softball Championships at
Rowan University on Saturday afternoon. The Colonials will take on
Mount Union College, who dropped a 5-0 decision to Denison
University earlier on Saturday, in the Mother's Day opener at 9
a.m. It will be WestConn's third straight elimination game.
Romyns allowed four hits and struck out three and walked two and
improves to 7-3 on the season.
Stacey DiMaggio put the Colonials up 1-0 with an
RBI double in the bottom of the first inning. Romyns, who led off
the inning with a walk, stole second base and came around to score
on the gapper.
WestConn (31-14) put a three spot on the board in the third inning.
Kristen Lugovich led off the frame with a walk and
moved around to third on a double by Loren
Angiolillo. Senior catcher Brittany
Finkeldey laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to
score Lugovich. Finkeldey stole second base and joined Angiolillo
at the plate following a two-RBI double by freshman right fielder
Amy Hartman.
Five different players had a hit for the winners. Lugovich did not
record and official at bat with three walks but scored two of the
team's four runs.
Romyns arm and solid defense did the rest for the Colonials.
Allyshia West pitched well in the loss. She struck out 11 but was
hampered with six free passes. She finishes her final collegiate
season with a 14-13 record.

GLASSBORO, N.J. - Shelby Slie
struck out eight and allowed six hits and the WestConn softball
team stayed alive in the NCAA Division III Softball Championships
with a 7-0 victory over host Rowan University on Saturday morning.
The Colonials will take on Hunter College, 6-4 winners over
Kean earlier on Saturday, in the second elimination game at 2:30
pm.
Slie improves to 17-7 on the season and will likely pitch again in
Saturday's nightcap.
WestConn (30-14) scattered nine hits and took advantage of three
Profs errors as only two of its seven runs were earned.
Kristen Lugovich powered the Colonials offense
going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. Becca
Andruskiwec and Meg Brunell each
went 2-for-3 and scored two runs.
The Colonials raced out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first
inning when lead off hitter Cortney Romyns walked,
stole second then came around to score on a throwing error by
Rowan. Senior third baseman Stacey DiMaggio
doubled home Lugovich.
One inning later, Lugovich had a bunt single that drove
Andruskiwec, who led off the inning with a single to center field,
in from third base. Brunell later scored on a double steal
and the Colonials never looked back.
WestConn added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth
inning. Amy Hartman led off the frame with a
single and later came around to score on a throwing error by Rowan
cather Stephanie Taraschi Lugovich belted a two-out single through
the box to plate Brunell and Andruskiwec with the game's final
runs.
Heidi Smith and Taraschi led the Profs offense with two hits each.
They finish their season at 31-11.
