Spaulding Earns All-American Honors in Decathalon

MARIETTA, Ohio -- University of Southern Maine
men's outdoor track and field senior James Spaulding
(Lewiston, Maine) completed the second day of the
decathlon in seventh place to earn All-America honors at the 2009
NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held
at Marietta (Ohio) College.
Spaulding becomes the first two-time All-American in the history of
the USM men's track and field program. He earned All-America honors
in the decathlon last year.
In ninth place when he stepped to the starting line for the final
event, the 1500 meters, Spaulding posted a time of 4 minutes, 37.04
seconds to pick up 699 points and moved up two positions. He
finished the grueling two-day, 10-event competition with 6,650
points, one point ahead of eighth place finisher Obinna
Nwanna of Case Western Reserve University.
The Lovell brothers, juniors Josh and Jeremy, of Linfield College
finished one-two in the decathlon with 7,080 and 6,857 points
respectively. 10 of the 16 competitors who completed all 10
events surpassed the NCAA automatic qualifying standard of 6,600
points.
Starting the second day of competition in seventh place, Spaulding
slipped to ninth after the first event, the 110-meter hurdles.
Spaulding posted a time of 16.53 seconds in the hurdles to earn 674
points. In the next event, he threw the discus 31.98 meters (104-9)
to collect 503 points while remaining in ninth place.
Spaulding moved into the top eight after the pole vault where he
cleared 4.05 meters (13-3 1/2) and picked up 631 points. He slipped
back to ninth after the javelin which he threw a distance of 48.71
(159-9) for 570 points, setting the stage for the 1500.
Seeded fourth heading into the competition based upon his school
record performance at the New England Division III Championships
(April 30-May 1), Spaulding missed his record mark by 29 points.
