NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. –The 2009 New England Alliance/Little East Conference Track and Field Championships will be hosted by Westfield State College on Saturday, April 25 at the Jerry Gravel Track, beginning at 11 a.m. The University of Southern Maine captured the 2008 Little East Conference men’s and women’s outdoor championship.

The 13th annual New England Alliance Championship will feature a 12-team field with six institutions each from the Little East Conference and Massachusetts State Athletic Conference (MASCAC). Eastern Connecticut State University, Keene State College, University of Massachusetts Boston, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Rhode Island College and the University of Southern Maine fill out the six-team Little East Conference field, while Bridgewater State College, Fitchburg State College, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Salem State College, Westfield State College and Worcester State College represent the MASCAC.

Last spring, the Huskies won the program’s second men’s outdoor track and field championship crown and ended the Warriors six-year reign atop the team standings. Southern Maine outpointed Keene State College by 69 total points to bring the championship trophy back to Gorham for the first time since 2001. Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine) led the charge for the Huskies, capturing a pair sprint events.

The Southern Maine women’s squad raised the championship trophy for the ninth consecutive season and 10th in the program’s history in Providence. The Huskies dominated the track events—winning five individual titles—to defeat Eastern Connecticut by 64 total points. Gabrielle Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) and Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) each won two individual events to pace the Southern Maine attack.

The Little East Conference and the MASCAC have partnered with EPS Solutions to sell a 2009 New England Alliance Championship t-shirt. EPS Solutions is currently accepting pre-orders at $15 per shirt. The championship appeal will also be available for purchase at the site of competition.
