Athlete of the Week
Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt.), Senior, University of
Southern Maine
Curtis Wheeler finished fifth in the 5,000 meters with a school
record time of 14:31.92, breaking his own school record time of
14:39.22 set last weekend at the New England Division III
Championships and improving his NCAA provisional qualifying time by
more than seven seconds. Wheeler has provisionally qualified for
the NCAA meet in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. The Huskies finished
the highly competitive three-day, all-division championship with 21
points to tie for 12th place among the 38 scoring institutions.
Field
Athlete of the Week
Jimmy Sawyer (Lewiston, Maine), Senior, University of
Southern Maine
Spaulding became the first University of Southern Maine men's
outdoor track and field competitor to win an event at the New
England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEIcAAA)
Outdoor Track and Field Championships, when he took the top spot in
the decathlon. Spaulding, second after the first day of
competition, set four personal-best marks during Friday's five
events to finish the two-day event with 6,286 points. His point
total established a new school record, breaking his previous mark
set April 16-17 at Holy Cross by 35 points. Spaulding had personal
best times or marks in the 110-meter hurdles (17.10 seconds), pole
vault (3.80 meters or 12-5 1/2), discus (30.41 meters or 99-9) and
the 1500 meters (4:33.90). .

Bryan Kolacz (Brentwood, N.H.), Freshman, Keene
State College
At the New England All-Division Championships at the
University of New Hampshire on Saturday, Kolacz improved on his
NCAA provisional qualifying mark with his fourth place finish
(178'-06") in the hammer.
