Corsairs set records at New England Championships

HANOVER, N.H. - A small contingent of student-athletes from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track and field teams turned in several good performances at the New England Track and Field Championships at Dartmouth College's Memorial Field Saturday afternoon.

Senior Jon Garcia (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham HS) finished first in the 110 meter hurdles in 14.31 seconds. It marked the fifth meet in a row in which Garcia finished first in the hurdles, and it earned him an automatic qualifying berth into the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Wisconsin-Oshkosh at the end of the month.

The men's 4 x 400 meter relay team of junior Chris Jodoin (Uxbridge, Mass./Maine), senior Yusef White (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford HS), sophomore Jason Muller (Norton, Mass./Norton HS) and freshman Michael Boucher (Byfield, Mass./Triton Regional HS) finished 12th in 3:22.72, breaking the school record in the process. Junior Katie Malloy (Agawam, Mass./Agawam HS) tied for sixth in the high jump at 5-3 3/4, while senior Jen Munyon (Berlin, Mass./Assabet Valley HS) was 21st in the 400 meter hurdles in a personal best time of 1:06.55. Junior Eric Holmes (Abington, Mass./Abington HS) turned in a season best performance while finishing 12th in the 3000 meter steeplechase, and Jodoin was 13th in the 400 meter hurdles in 56.09 seconds.

"It was a great meet," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Devlyn Lovell. "The competition level was very high, and we competed well. Jon Garcia qualified automatically in the hurdles, and his time puts him at number one in the national rankings. There was a real good field, and he just ran away with it. Our 4 x 4 relay set the school record, Jen Munyon ran a personal best in the hurdles and just missed the school record, Eric had a PR in the steeplechase, and Katie had some good jumps in the high jump."

UMass Dartmouth's men scored 10 points, and tied for 20th in a 37-team field that included teams from all NCAA divisions. Rhode Island finished first with 155.5 points. The women finished 30th of 34 teams with 2.5 points. Williams was first with 100 points.

The Corsairs will complete at MIT's Last Chance Qualifying Meet next weekend.
