Stewart and Anchormen upset No. 5 Corsairs

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass.-Cameron Stewart's (Newport, R.I.) layup with 3:23 remaining allowed visiting Rhode Island College to take the lead for good, and the Anchormen outscored the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's basketball team, 13-5, in the final three and a half minutes and went on to a 79-72 victory in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader at the Tripp Athletic Center Tuesday evening.

Wil Lyons followed Stewart's layup with a layup and free throw with 2:08 remaining, and then Antone Gray and Tirrell Hill each made free throws to give RIC a six-point lead. Senior guard A.J. Tavares (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) hit a three-pointer with 33 seconds left to make it 73-70, but the Anchormen made six consecutive free throws before Tavares made the game's final basket as time expired.

The Corsairs used a 10-2 run midway through the second half to build a 59-51 lead, but the Anchormen came back with an 11-2 run of their own that ended with Stewart's layup that gave them a 68-67 advantage with 3:23 left in the game.

"We didn't play well, their defense forced us into turnovers that we don't usually make," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. "We had more turnovers than we have had in any game all season. When we had chances to make plays on offense, we didn't make them, which is uncharacteristic of us."

Senior center Dan Holbrook (Lexington, MA/Lexington HS/Westfield State) led all scorers with 23 points and 17 rebounds for a double double. Senior forward Cory Tynes (Springfield, MA/Commerce HS) also had a double double with 21 points and 10 boards, while Tavares added 17 points. Stewart led RIC with 21 points, Bobby Bailey contributed 16, Lyons had 13 and Hill added 11. Lyons and Bailey each had eight rebounds for the Anchormen, who were out rebounded by the Corsairs, 42-41.

The Corsairs dropped to 20-2 and 9-2 in the Little East Conference with the loss, while the Anchormen improved to 17-5 and 9-2 and moved into a first place tie in the Little East Conference with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Eastern Connecticut State in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon, while RIC will host Southern Maine Saturday.
