Southern Maine Names New Volleyball and Men's and Women's Tennis Coaches

GORHAM, Maine -- After a two-year hiatus from varsity competition the University of Southern Maine Huskies women’s volleyball team will return to action this fall under the direction of first-year head coach Anne Tricomi.

Joining the USM Athletic Department in late July, Tricomi has previously served as an assistant coach for a pair of Division III programs, Bowdoin and Colby College, and Division II Bentley College. Most recently, Tricomi led the Portland North Junior Olympic Club in Portland, Maine – an 18-and-under gold  level premier Maine-based volleyball team.

A former outside and right side hitter for the Colby College Mules, Tricomi was a four-year letter winner and served as the team captain in 2001 as a senior. She earned the team’s 110 % Hustle Award in 1999. Tricomi also has playing experience with the University of Michigan Women’s Club team as well as various teams in the Maine State Volleyball Association.

Tricomi earned her bachelor’s degree in English and Classical Civilizations with a minor in Education from Colby in 2002. She received her Master’s degree in Health Behavior from the University of Michigan.

Tricomi and the Huskies will open the 2009 season on Wednesday, September 2 (7:00 p.m.) against in-state rival St. Joseph’s College at the Hill Gymnasium.  It will mark the Huskies first varsity competition since the 2006 season.

GORHAM, Maine -- Ron Chicoine, the varsity head coach for the Lewiston High School Boys’ Tennis team, has been named the head coach for the University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s and women’s tennis teams. USM Athletic Director Al
Bean made the announcement earlier this week.

Chicoine comes to Southern Maine with a remarkably successful seven-year tenure at Lewiston High School. Over the course of seven seasons, Chicoine has led the Blue Devils to an outstanding 107-1 record while capturing a string of seven consecutive Class A State Championships.

“Ron brings a great track record of success,” noted Bean. “We are excited to see where he can bring our programs in the upcoming seasons.”

During his career at Lewiston High School, Chicoine’s team earned the Maine Tennis Association Sportsmanship Award in 2005. Individually, Chicoine was named the KVAC Boys’ Tennis Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2006 and the Maine
Sunday Telegram Coach of the Year in 2007. Chicoine will continue to coach the Lewiston High School team.

A former four-year collegiate player for the University of Maine, including a three-year stint as the Black Bears top singles player and team captain, Chicoine also served as the interim head coach for one season at his alma mater during the 1984-1985 season. Chicoine earned All-New England honors in 1984.

Still actively playing, Chicoine is ranked number one in the Men’s Open Doubles for Maine with partner Steve Eddy.

Chicoine earned his MD from the University of Vermont in 1989 after earning his undergraduate degree in Zoology from the University of Maine in 1985. He is currently a Staff Anesthesiologist at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston.

Chicoine is a member of the Maine Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Society of Anesthesiology. Chicoine served as the president of the Maine Society of Anesthesiologist from 1996-2001.

Chicoine begins his collegiate coaching career on Sept. 3 (Thur.) as the USM women’s tennis opens its season at Thomas (4:00).
